How This 21-Year-Old Created a Ring Worn by Michelle Obama and Serena Williams From Her Dorm Room At the point when she won the Emmy Award for the HBO arrangement Big Little Lies, Nicole Kidman gave a discourse saying she trusted her girls would take a gander at the sculpture and feel roused by what ladies can achieve. However, at that time, Kidman was additionally brandishing another metal image: a little ring on her pinky finger with a bigger jewel close to a littler one, representing the intensity of mentorship between ladies. The pinky ring originated from Shiffon Co., a fine adornments organization began by 21-year-old Shilpa Yarlagadda in her Harvard apartment. Yarlagadda's Duet Pinky Ring accompanies a pinky guarantee promise taken by clients to help ladies in business. The organization follows through on its own guarantee: Shiffon gives 50 percent of its benefits to its cause arm, Startup Girl Foundation, which gives seed subsidizing to female business people. Since the organization's origin in 2017, VIPs like Emma Watson, Serena Williams, and Michelle Obama have been spotted wearing the ring. Yarlagadda says neither she nor her group legitimately connected with famous people to wear the ring; they discovered Shiffon through informal exchange and felt attracted to its message of helping young ladies. We've been acquainted with big names who are accomplishing something with their foundation to enable ladies, Yarlagadda told MONEY. We need this [company] to be tied in with supporting others, and that helps everybody, including yourself. She gained from the missteps of her first business. Yarlagadda consistently needed to begin her own organization. The Palo Alto-based business person explored different avenues regarding noble cause centered plans of action in secondary school by making a non-benefit mentoring organization to help battling understudies. In spite of her prosperity â€" she was welcome to talk at boards and made her own application â€" Yarlagadda discovered non-benefit work requested consistent consideration regarding raising support, which removed time from chipping away at a social effect. With Shiffon Co., Yarlagadda switched her thought. She looked to utilize benefits from offering gems to support a non-benefit arm â€" permitting her to sidestep raising support and taking care of gifts, yet still spotlight on a bigger crucial. The undergrad chose direct-to-purchaser fine gems, so she could offer a reasonable item contrasted with increased retail establishment rings, yet still work inside an evaluating structure that would give her enough cash to give. At that point, she was just 19 and there was one significant issue: she knew nothing about creation fine gems. Her initial step was Googling how to make adornments and perusing a wikiHow article. She wasn't reluctant to connect with outsiders and request help. After rapidly acknowledging wikiHow wasn't going to cut it, Yarlagadda started cold messaging specialists in the design business. She would begin her messages by presenting herself and what she respected about every magnate, before approaching them for help in completing her drives. Superstar beautician Sarah Slutsky and ability office official Chandni Modha in the long run turned into her guides, removing time from their work routines to converse with Yarlagadda about her business and interfacing her with the correct individuals. Yarlagadda says there was a period Modha would converse with her via telephone more than Modha conversed with her own family â€" before they even met face to face. It's insane that somebody would be so ideal to converse with me so much, Yarlagadda says. At the point when somebody puts stock in you, it causes you to feel like you can do it. Yarlagadda was a green bean at Harvard at that point, and took a year off from school to begin the organization. She found a diamond setter in New York City to make the items, and did the showcasing and marking with a group of her companions. Presently back at school, she deals with the whole organization directly from her apartment. She right now sells seven kinds of pinky rings produced using real silver, yellow gold, and rose gold, with white or purple sapphires or precious stones. The rings cost between $90 to $640, contingent upon the metal and stone. In spite of the fact that staying with up an and attending a university at the same time can be testing (Yarlagadda facilitated Shiffon's first Women's Day occasion in New York in the middle of midterms), she says her faith in the organization's crucial her centered around adjusting her bustling life. The vast majority come at organizations from the outlook of, 'How would we adapt it,' yet our objective was consistently the social crucial, says. I truly put stock in that. Her organization accompanies a helpful result. The mentorship Yarlagadda got rouses the organization's message today. While Shiffon Co. itself didn't get outside investment subsidizing, the organization's fundamental strategic to go about as a pledge drive for ladies run new businesses that move in the direction of social equity. 50% of the organization's benefits have gone to five female business people working in the U.S. furthermore, Africa. (Yarlagadda declined to share the specific sum.) The new companies incorporate an instant message transport ticket framework in Nairobi, a substance free eatable facemask organization, and a make-up line attempting to destigmatize beautifying agents for men. Beside subsidizing, Yarlagadda says she furnishes her business people with access to a Mentor Board of achieved ladies in showcasing, design, excellence, and different regions. Yarlagadda says financing the organization just gives female business people a foot in the entryway: numerous at that point begin getting other VC subsidizing through associations with Shiffon Co. In the long run Yarlagadda wants to recruit all the more full-time representatives to develop the business, however until further notice, attempting to support other female business people and bolster ladies in business is reward enough. We're never going to quit enabling ladies since it's been some time since the #MeToo development occurred, Yarlagadda says. It's something we as a whole need to keep doing.

Client Development You Dont Have To Be Original

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Client Development: You Don’t Have to be Original When I was a young lawyer, I rarely had an original idea.  I was able to put pieces of ideas others had together and create something. I saw this quote by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club,    that really applied to my success practicing law: Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known. I am the combined effort of my father, my first mentor, a top construction lawyer, famous coaches, business writers, motivational writers and many others. Last week I posted: Career Success: Who is holding you accountable?    I borrowed from several of those people who held me accountable. My father taught me to find something I believed I could become the best and go for it. My first mentor taught me I could have a strong work ethic and still be a good husband and father. Overton Currie, a top notch construction lawyer taught me how to create content (writing and presentations) that construction clients would value and then present them in a way that be unique and most engaging. I could go on, but I hope you get the idea. You are the combined effort of everyone you have ever known. Take a moment and think about what part of each person you borrowed and how you are using it. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Think Like a Millionaire in Less than 5 Minutes Per Day

Adopt the thought process of a Millionaire in under 5 Minutes Per Day Who wouldn't like to be a mogul? While most specialists just dream of this kind of achievement, top rated creator and execution master Noah St. John has a bit by bit way to deal with assistance individuals make thisâ€"and other life objectivesâ€"a reality. Through his The Book of AFFORMATIONS, St. John offers perusers bits of knowledge and steps to utilize the procedure of AFFORMATIONS, engaging inquiries that change one's convictions about him and herself and his and her relationship to the universe, to accomplish wellbeing, riches, love and bliss. To some extent one of this article, St. John shared his inspiration driving making the book that has helped thousands improve their lives. Peruse on to find his tips for achieving two territories most specialists make progress toward every dayâ€"riches and joy: 1. One focal point of your book is riches. Is riches imperative to be cheerful? Why or why not? Growing up poor in a rich neighborhood, I got the opportunity to see direct the division between the wealthy â€" which was everybody around us â€" and those who lack wealth, which was my family. That was the first occasion when I understood that there is no positive aspect regarding being penniless. Having riches gives you decisions, and the decisions fulfill you, not simply the cash. For instance, an ongoing study indicated that under 38 percent of Americans are upbeat in their occupations. That implies that the vast majority are working in employments they don't care for on the grounds that they accept they don't have the choice to do what they truly need. That is one reason we enable our customers to have more options throughout everyday life, and having riches is one of those decisions. 2. I'm certain we've all viewed the TV demonstrate Who Wants to be a Millionaire? what's more, have longed for turning into that rich sometime in the not so distant future. You really offer supportive data required for individuals to arrive at this objective. What are the five force propensities for multi-moguls? 1. Assume 100 percent liability for your decisions. 2. Use Afformations. 3. Have an incredible emotionally supportive network. 4. Get a coach. 5. Allow yourself to succeed. 3. How might one have a similar outlook as a mogul in under five minutes of the day? When you begin following the 4-advance Afformations Method I give you in my book, you'll begin to get mindful of the sabotaging addresses you've been asking yourself, similar to Why wouldn't i be able to do anything right? or then again How come there's in every case more MONTH left toward the finish of the MONEY? At that point, as you begin to supplant your sabotaging inquiries with enabling Afformations, you'll understand that it doesn't need to be hard or confounding. That is one explanation that incalculable individuals have kept in touch with me on our Facebook page saying that once they began utilizing Afformations for only a couple of moments daily, the progressions were quick and dependable. For instance, I was on a radio show as of late when a lady brought in and said that her relative was suing her for authority of her little kids, and that this claim had been continuing for a considerable length of time. I gave her a few instances of Afformations she could use to support the circumstance. The following day, the lady kept in touch with me and said that her relative had reached her out of nowhere and said that she was dropping the claim! Coincidentally, taking on a similar mindset as a tycoon doesn't imply that you begin utilizing Afformations and a million dollars mysteriously shows up in your ledger. It doesn't work that way. This isn't enchantment, it's science. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority are asking themselves debilitating inquiries and carrying on with an actual existence they don't need. Utilizing Afformations will assist you with concentrating on what's RIGHT with you, instead of what's going on with you. 4. Last considerations? Studies have demonstrated that while the cognizant brain can hold just a couple of thoughts one after another, your inner mind psyche can hold some more. That is the reason you can never truly overpower your psyche mind. Consider it along these lines: what number negative musings have you had about yourself in the course of your life? A billion? A trillion? A large portion of us could scarcely check the quantity of negative considerations we've had about ourselves. At the point when you think these things, that is no joke to these negative considerations in your mind. That is one explanation we urge our customers to peruse their Afformations, yet in addition state them and hear them out utilizing iAfform Audios. What's more, that is the reason temporarily we're parting with free downloadable iAfform Audios when you purchase The Book of Afformations at www.Afformationsbook.com/more. Keep afforming!

Even though the selection is high during this time, you will also be competing with other buyers and sellers who will not be willing to reduce prices. Demand increases prices so this is understandable. For the best deals, try shopping for a home in November, January and December when schools are already in session. Prices drop as temperatures drop Property prices tend to drop at the end of the year around Christmas since that is the coldest time of the year. Rather than purchasing a family home as an investment, it would be better to invest in rentals at this time. This will be a more affordable option for you since more sellers will be out enjoying the holidays. You can turn this to your advantage since it’s highly likely that properties on sale during this time have been in the market for a while. Chances are sellers are keener to sell them off quickly before another year passes and the value drops. This will give you more control over the bargaining process and chances are you will get a property at less than the asking price. However, since most sellers will be enjoying the holidays, there may be a lack of properties available that you may be interested in. You may not be able to find one you are looking for since property diversity will also decrease. On the other hand, if you manage to find one at a reasonable price, have the snow removed to see what it will look like in the summer. This is a necessary step since the snow might be hiding issues that are not apparent. It may look picturesque in the winter, but once the ice melts, it might look bare and shabby. This includes landscaping features that may look completely different during spring. To avoid a bad purchase, ask the seller for pictures of the property that are taken in the summer and spring. Plus, inspect the interior and exterior of the house thoroughly and shop around for more properties before finalizing your choice. Some sellers try to benefit from low buyer competition by placing unsuitable properties up for sale during the down season. If you want to buy a property as an investment, go for it but if you wish to live in it for the next 10 years or so, it would be best to save up more. You should have enough to place at least 20% down on a home that you plan on living in with your family. Coping With the Emotions

Coping With the Emotions Coping With The Emotions Of A Disaster For Emergency Respondents The aftermath of tragedies can bring some of the most grueling and traumatic hours to not just the victims, but also to emergency respondents. After all, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), exempts no one, not even rescuers. Emergency rescue personnel face a “high risk” of facing PTSD due to the nature of their work. In fact, these modern heroes can experience a broad range of health and mental health consequences as a result of work-related exposures to critical incidents. A necessary practice in life-saving work is:  do first, feel later. When facing calamity, rushing into a hostile environment, or providing treatment to injured victims, there’s barely any room available for having normal human interactions. It’s almost inevitable that at some point, all those experiences will catch up to any rescuer. Responding to accidents in the workplace Answering to emergencies can be both rewarding and challenging. While preventing and controlling damages and losses can be a source of fulfillment, witnessing human suffering, being in hostile environments, intense workloads, life-and-death situations, and temporary separation from family can affect any respondent’s emotional and mental stability.  For most of us anyway, stress can lead to any of the following: Rescuers experience stress during a crisis. When too much of that builds up, the negative outlook can cause: Burnout  â€" feelings of extreme exhaustion and being overwhelmed. Secondary traumatic stress  â€" stress reactions and symptoms resulting from exposure to another individual’s traumatic experiences, rather than from exposure directly to a traumatic event. Fortunately, overexposure to stress can be adequately addressed through timely reaction and proper implementation of policies. Taking breaks, exercising, eating healthy foods, and using the buddy system, among many others, are some of the ways that can prevent and reduce burnout and secondary traumatic stress syndromes. In addition, recognizing the signs of PTSD among your ranks early on can prevent any particular case from developing into something more serious and damaging. Training the workforce and preventing emergencies Employees in the general industry as well as those who are dealing with emergency response and chemical waste cleanup can also be exposed to post-incident stress. Which is why for them, taking an online HAZWOPER course is highly… Click To Tweet Employees in the general industry as well as those who are dealing with emergency response and chemical waste cleanup can also be exposed to post-incident stress. Which is why for them, taking an online HAZWOPER course is highly recommended. Furthermore, workers who are regularly onsite-but emergency possibilities are low; workers with limited or occasional hazardous waste exposure; and workers who are engaged in operations related to chemical waste cleanup and disposal must take the HAZWOPER training, too. With this approach, the entire workforce will be more competent in dealing with work-related incidents. The same approach can be done to other industries, which should either prevent accidents from happening or make it easier for all employees to address the dangers associated with their job. Summing up In the wake of a disaster, it is natural to experience a multitude of powerful emotions and thoughts. Amidst these times, don’t forget to connect with family, friends, colleagues, and others that you are most comfortable with. Take care of yourself and know when and how to seek help.

This group of people think their dreams mean something

This gathering of individuals think their fantasies mean something This gathering of individuals think their fantasies mean something From various perspectives, dream investigation was our first cut at brain science. The old rulers of Mesopotamia got dreams as perfect insight, as evidenced by the remaking of the sanctuary of Ninurta, which happened simply after Gudea, of the House Lagash, was purportedly advised to do as such in a sleep vision. The Ancient Egyptians were said to accept that their Gods utilized dreams as a method of speaking with them. For those with no profound or strict affiliations, Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung may all the more promptly ring a bell. These two are regularly credited with presenting dream interpretation as a genuine mental thought in western society.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Today, there are a few tenable ways of thinking devoted to the possibility that fantasies are, or if nothing else can be, valid philosophical capacities, however not every person is sold on it.To re st perchance to dreamMichael Schredl and Kelly Bulkeley recently distributed another investigation in the Journal of Dream Research, that investigates the 21st-century disposition toward dreams. Beware of the Vanishing Job Posting

Beware of the Vanishing Job Posting Dear Coach Wolfgang, Recently, I applied for several jobs online and I was so excited to hear back from one of the companies. When I tried to look for the job posting on their website, to refresh my understanding of the skills and qualifications they want, I realized the job description was removed. Now what do I do? This is definitely an area to be mindful of! Finding jobs on websites has become very user friendly. However, the downside to this ease of use is that companies can easily pull those descriptions when they have enough applicants to consider. The first step is to go beyond the site you found the description on and see if you can find a similar description posted on another website. You would at least have the basic information for the type of position. Also, don’t forget to refer back to your cover letter for the position. Within that cover letter, you highlighted some of the key skills they were looking for in the position and how you met those skills. In the future, if you find a position you want to apply for, copy and paste the information into another document so you have it to refer back to in case the posting is taken down. Alternatively, print out the job posting and keep it in a file with your other documents related to the job. Information is definitely easier to find these days, but it is also easier to remove. Your best bet in the future is to keep the job posting information in a place that you can control and that will be easy for you to find when you’re called for an interview.

6 7-Figure Resume Trends You Need to Know

6 7-Figure Resume Trends You Need to Know Sizing up your executive competition in preparation for a job search? You might have noticed new trends in resumes for 6 and 7-figure candidates. No longer the staid documents seen in the past, executive-level resumes (and LinkedIn profiles) require fresh design and concentrated text to attract the right kind of attention. Here are the latest trends in executive resume writing with tips on incorporating them for a successful job search: 1 Shorter Page Length Isn’t Necessarily Better. The one-page resume “rule” is really a guideline for targeting your executive resume to the audience who will read it. For example, it’s common to shorten your resume considerably when applying to a Board seat, or when networking in person. Each of these situations requires a snapshot of your past leadership experience, education, executive accomplishments, and affiliations â€" condensed and to the point. However, many recruiters and employers like to see sufficient detail on your experience in MA strategy, bottom-line profits, team size, and international influence. It’s best to use a storytelling approach that describes how you’ve overcome business challenges or led turnarounds, complete with hard-hitting metrics. Incorporating this type of detail often requires extending your executive resume to 2 or even 3 pages for optimum readability. 2 Color is Important for Emphasizing Key Points. Yes, you CAN use color. Black-and-white documents heavy with detail are easier to skim if you’ve added a bit of color. Your executive resume needn’t employ flashing lights and neon green, however, in order to make your point. Step into the use of color by altering your resume headlines with a subtle blue or shading a few areas for emphasis, as shown in this example of an IT executive resume (produced for CIO.coms IT Resume Makeover series).  3 Profile Summaries Must Quickly Convey Your Point. In the past, executive resume summaries were long paragraphs offering vague statements about leadership qualities and dedication (admirable qualities â€" but they could apply to anyone!). Today, your resume qualifications profile should be short and stick to facts, such as a list of international regions managed or a reputation for leading turnarounds. This resume profile summary for a VP of Sales shows how to narrow the focus: Executive rainmaker noted for quick assessment and turnaround of underperforming teams (Americas APAC)â€"leveraging technology and marketing insight to correct sales methods for up to 70% improvement. High-energy, hard-charging leader who thrives on the “thrill of the sale” and structures teams for productivity. 4 Resume Length Should be Tuned for Your Target Audience. No one has the time to read a 7-page novel of your accomplishments. By culling success stories to hard-hitting statements, you’ll show employers the ability to focus on relevant points. Most executive resumes can fit squarely into 2 or 3 pages, with Board resumes such as  this CEO resume  taking only a single page. This strategy quickly introduces the candidate and provides easy navigation. If you struggle to condense your resume, try reworking your history into “sound bites” that capture the actions you took and the end results, using these examples for inspiration: Delivered 42% annual profits by focusing manufacturing teams on top 8 product lines and rationalizing underperforming products. Exceeded profit records 34% and reached #1 satisfaction scores from new relationships built with Fortune 500 customers.  5 Accolades Can Strengthen Your Brand Message. Youve probably received commendations over the years for projects, sales awards, new products, or customer retention. Instead of forgetting about these testimonials, you can strategically incorporate them into your C-suite resume for a stronger personal brand message. Be sure to include kudos that reinforce your ROI. For example, a note from the CEO on the success of a new acquisition can back up your experience in MA strategy. If youve excelled in mentoring junior executives, you could also pull in a quote from a direct report stating how much theyve learned from you. When using one of these recommendations in your resume, shrink it down to relevant facts and include the job title of the person issuing it (such as VP of Business Development at XYZ Company). This award-winning CEO and Board Advisor resume shows short, powerful commendations in the first part of the document illustrating his value to Wall Street and parent company executives. 6 Symbols Headlines Can Convey Your Stature ROI. Theres more than one way to demonstrate your fitness for a specific industry or career level, as shown in this example of a VP Medical and Clinical Affairs resume. To describe her area of focus, a simple symbol and headline noting her specialties were used at the top of the document. Resume headlines are one of the best ways to convey salient points of your background, while preserving space for other relevant details. To create headlines for your executive resume, jot down short sentences or phrases that encapsulate what you do best, such as Scientific Medical Strategies Poised for Significant Revenue Results.   Dont use boring section titles! Instead, insert headlines like Strong, Consistent Profits Market Transformation  to introduce your achievements. In short, your outdated executive resume CAN pack more punch with some tweaks to your content, formatting, and writing style. Consider incorporating todays executive resume design and writing trends to ensure you get MORE than a passing glance for choice 6 and 7-figure roles.

There are numerous unwritten principles or mystery best practices you wont think about until its past the point of no return. Your Reference List Is More Than Names and Contact Info In fact, all you have to flexibly is the name and contact data for your references. Be that as it may, there would one say one is question each recruiting director has when perusing your rundown of references-How does this individual know your work? You can without much of a stretch fix this and make your rundown of references progressively important. You should simply portray your relationship with every one of your references. At the point when you provide a one-sentence portrayal of how every individual knows your work, it will help in the effort and addressing during a reference check. Theres another explanation this is significant. The references you rundown may not work at a similar organization any more, because of the way that individuals change occupations so as often as possible. At the point when you depict how the individual knows your work, demonstrate what job they held and to what extent theyve known you and your work. On the off chance that there was a significant venture, you might need to reference that also. The data you give may look something like this: Charles Smith, Manager X Company, New York, NY Phone: (212) 555-1234 csmith@xcompany.net Recruited by Mr. Smith to be a piece of his inside client support group. I worked intimately with Mr. Smith during my five years at X. Mentor Your References It isnt enough to just ask past partners to be references. What they state about your exhibition could represent the deciding moment your odds of finding a new line of work offer. This is the thing that you have to do (and a great many people wont). The special reward is that your references will value your exertion and polished skill. Indeed, You Need Business Cards Giving over your business card is such a great amount of simpler than composing your contact data on a napkin. On the off chance that youve been organizing without them, presently is an incredible time to cause yourself look and to feel increasingly proficient. So what data goes on your business card? While its best to incorporate your calling or sort of job you are searching for, dont let that impede requesting your cards. Theres nothing amiss with having a universally handy business card with your name, telephone number, email address and LinkedIn profile URL. Rather than utilizing a particular activity title, you can utilize the more extensive word related title. For instance, rather than venture director, you could utilize venture the board. Yours may look something like this: Sara Miller Venture Management | Software Development (555) 444-1212 saramiller@email.net https://www.linkedin.com/in/saramiller Include A Voicemail Greeting Time after time individuals don't record a welcome on their voice message. In addition to the fact that it is unoriginal, it can lead some human asset experts to think about whether theyve contacted the opportune individual. Take out the uncertainty and utilize a warm proficient welcome. Thank the individual for connecting and make certain to incorporate your name. It might sound something like: Youve arrived at the voice message for Pat Jones. Much thanks to you for calling. Im incapable to answer my telephone at the present time yet please leave your name and number and Ill get back to you as quickly as time permits. React To Messages Immediately Have you overlooked messages or phone message messages for a considerable length of time? To stick out and show how mindful and dependable you are, dont pause. React to each email and phone message inside 24 hours. Indeed, even a short reaction that says youve got the message and youll be in contact soon, is superior to nothing. Continuously Follow-Up With A Thank You Message Sending a card to say thanks after a meeting is genuinely normal. However, it is less normal to get a thank you, either by means of email or ordinary mail, after a systems administration trade. This is actually why you should set aside the effort to do it. Close the circle with all the contacts youve made all through your pursuit of employment. Your message should offer your thanks for their help. You additionally need to keep the lines of correspondence open, so be certain you welcome them to connect on the off chance that they need anything. Learning Opportunities

Upcoming Network/Learning Opportunities There are a number of networking opportunities that I want to let you know about. Two are pretty much for Utah locals, and three are for people across the country. Heres my list! Oct 22 Blogging 4 Business (this is for anyone, including YOU) As a blogger I get hit up by PR and marketing firms frequently. Ive had the typical not-so-good approaches, and only ONE PR professional has done an excellent job. This conference is all about how marketing and PR professionals can understand and leverage blogging and social media, and incorporate it better into their strategic offering. The conference is in Salt Lake City, tickets are $299, and we are having some incredible speakers coming in (confirmed speakers include Wendy Piersall, Liz Strauss, Rand Bateman, Lindsey Pollak, Tim Stay, Gary Goldhammer and more to come). If you are a PR or marketing professional Id say this is a cant miss event. If you are just a blogger and interested in furthering your blogging business, I think its an excellent opportunity to learn and network. If you provide services to PR or marketing then get in touch with me. Disclosure: Im one of two event organizers (and I guarantee this is going to be awesome)! November 5th and 6th Sales Shebang! (for women sales professionals/executives) If you are in sales then be at this conference in Minneapolis. What Do You Give A Mentor at Thanksgiving - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

What Do You Give A Mentor at Thanksgiving - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Mentors are an uncelebrated group of devoted individuals, who often give their time in return for nothing more than your carrying on their legacy of giving back. If you have a mentor, you know the advice, conversations, guidance, interest and encouragement may be the single greatest determinant of your success. A mentor can help you keep a good job, gain a promotion or help you transition to a position more suited to your nature, your personal brand and your skills. Isn’t it wonderful to have someone not just rooting for you, but acting as your advocate, sounding board and trusted advisor? Every year I choose two people to mentor, although if you looked at my calendar, you would wonder why. Or more directly ask: how do they get fit into such a demanding schedule? I ask myself the same question every week. But, somehow the time gets set aside and the sessions take place. The two people I mentor are simply and truly wonderful. They are hardworking, self-motivated and put into practice everything we cover. We have a terrific dialogue, where we raise questions, go over details, discuss potential strategies and end with a list of tactical changes for them to put into play. The best part is they report back their progress. Sometimes I get a text that shares the triumph of their actions. I get to hear them crowing about their latest achievement. Sometimes I get a urgent text that asks a need-to-know-right-now question. I tap back some alternatives, with some predictions about how they will be received. I welcome these short interruptions as much as our mentoring sessions, because they reflect how seriously these individuals are taking our time together. That’s all the thanks mentors need. You might not have a formal mentoring relationship, like the ones I have with my mentees. You might not have the same magnitude of access, attention or advice from a mentor. But you may have quite a number of people who have taken an interest in you, answered some questions or provided some direction for you. Those less formal relationships are the ones that you might want to honor at this time of the US Thanksgiving holiday. Send a card, an email, make a call or text the people who have helped you out this year. Let them know what youve done, how far youve come and if youve passed on their legacy, by doing a little mentoring of your own. Yes, now is the time to give thanks to all the people who have done at least a little something to guide you, been a shoulder for you or in some way made your life better. I have a long list of those people, since being a mentor does not mean I know it all â€" I just know some of the finest people in business, and they have made my journey easier, safer and richer. You are one of my informal mentors. Each week, you give me a destination; a time to reflect on what’s important and what I have to share about it in a blog thats read by people all around the world. Without that responsibility, my life would not be as rich or filled with the connectedness I share with 4.5 million people who read my blogs, books, posts or attend my learning programs. So two words from me to reflect on now: thank you.

Checklist for career change

Checklist for career change My husband recently changed careers. Well, not really recently actually two years ago. But for those of you who have never endured a career change, two years is nothing. It still feels like the beginning because salary-wise, you *are* at the beginning. For the most part, his switch has been going well. He went from management positions in the entertainment industry to field research in a social justice think tank. Basically, he spends his days in prisons, trying to get the government to implement new programs. He made the change exactly the way a career advisor would recommend not surprising since he has to eat dinner with one every night. For those of you considering a change, here is the plan he followed: Step 1. Soul search. Consider all aspect of change including, lifestyle, pay and any education youll need. Be realistic about what you value in life and work. Step 2.Downsize. Get rid of huge car payments, huge mortgage payments, and huge expectations for dinners, vacations and clothes. Step 3. Network. Headhunters and help wanted ads are geared toward people who have skills in a certain area. People who change jobs do not have skills in the new area, so networking is the best way to get someone to give you a chance. Step 4. Try it out. Youll never know if you fit into the career environment until you try it. A baby step, like volunteering, or taking a part-time job will allow you to go back to your originally career if need be. After step four, there is nothing but taking the leap. So my husband did. His mentor at his new job is ten years younger than he is. His boss makes 25% less than what my husbands paycheck used to be. The people below my husband in pecking order are college interns. And this is two years after he made the switch. Not that any of this is a surprise. Of course, this is what happens when you change careers. By all measures, my husband is flourishing in his new career. He is at a top non-profit agency, he is writing significant papers, he is working with geniuses. But he is making no money. I keep telling myself that this is what we knew would happen. That we traded money for career happiness. I assure myself that my husband will make more money later, when his is not swimming in the ranks of college interns. But there is so much pressure to be happy. Pressure from me, that is, on my husband. Every night I check in with him look for signs that he is elated with his new career choice. And, big surprise, with a new career and a young child, most nights he is exhausted, not elated. Which makes me say, Why are we making all these financial sacrifices if youre not happy?!!?! My husband doesnt answer. Its hard when he doesnt answer. But I know its because he feels guilty because he really, really, really, doesnt want to go back to the entertainment industry. And I cant stop thinking, If youre unhappy in both careers, why not be unhappy in the one that pays more? I know youre thinking, Gosh, Penelope, can you be a little more supportive? But dont say that until youve had a spouse throw away a lucrative career. And anyway, Im trying; I see there is one more step on the career change checklist that we probably should have done: Step 5: Set spousal expectations. I should have gone through the process with my husband. I should have evaluated with him what sacrifices I can make, what lifestyle expectations I had, even how happy I expected him to be. I was so determined to let him make his own decisions that Im finding now that Im the one who is floundering. You think, at some point, that you know for sure a career change was good. But thats not true for everyone. Or, maybe its true for everyone, but not in the first few years. Yes, you can be sure that the new job is more fun or more rewarding than the old job, but how much more fun do you need to be having in order to justify the financial sacrifice? Im not sure. So we keep going on the career change path, hoping to find the answer buried beneath the indignities.
