Upcoming Network/Learning Opportunities There are a number of networking opportunities that I want to let you know about. Two are pretty much for Utah locals, and three are for people across the country. Heres my list! The conference is in Salt Lake City, tickets are $299, and we are having some incredible speakers coming in (confirmed speakers include Wendy Piersall, Liz Strauss, Rand Bateman, Lindsey Pollak, Tim Stay, Gary Goldhammer and more to come). If you are a PR or marketing professional Id say this is a cant miss event. What Do You Give A Mentor at Thanksgiving - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

What Do You Give A Mentor at Thanksgiving - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Mentors are an uncelebrated group of devoted individuals, who often give their time in return for nothing more than your carrying on their legacy of giving back. If you have a mentor, you know the advice, conversations, guidance, interest and encouragement may be the single greatest determinant of your success. A mentor can help you keep a good job, gain a promotion or help you transition to a position more suited to your nature, your personal brand and your skills. Isn’t it wonderful to have someone not just rooting for you, but acting as your advocate, sounding board and trusted advisor? Every year I choose two people to mentor, although if you looked at my calendar, you would wonder why. Or more directly ask: how do they get fit into such a demanding schedule? I ask myself the same question every week. But, somehow the time gets set aside and the sessions take place. The two people I mentor are simply and truly wonderful. They are hardworking, self-motivated and put into practice everything we cover. We have a terrific dialogue, where we raise questions, go over details, discuss potential strategies and end with a list of tactical changes for them to put into play. The best part is they report back their progress. Sometimes I get a text that shares the triumph of their actions. I get to hear them crowing about their latest achievement. Sometimes I get a urgent text that asks a need-to-know-right-now question. I tap back some alternatives, with some predictions about how they will be received. I welcome these short interruptions as much as our mentoring sessions, because they reflect how seriously these individuals are taking our time together. That’s all the thanks mentors need. You might not have a formal mentoring relationship, like the ones I have with my mentees. You might not have the same magnitude of access, attention or advice from a mentor. But you may have quite a number of people who have taken an interest in you, answered some questions or provided some direction for you. Those less formal relationships are the ones that you might want to honor at this time of the US Thanksgiving holiday. Send a card, an email, make a call or text the people who have helped you out this year. Let them know what youve done, how far youve come and if youve passed on their legacy, by doing a little mentoring of your own. Yes, now is the time to give thanks to all the people who have done at least a little something to guide you, been a shoulder for you or in some way made your life better. I have a long list of those people, since being a mentor does not mean I know it all â€" I just know some of the finest people in business, and they have made my journey easier, safer and richer. You are one of my informal mentors. Each week, you give me a destination; a time to reflect on what’s important and what I have to share about it in a blog thats read by people all around the world. Without that responsibility, my life would not be as rich or filled with the connectedness I share with 4.5 million people who read my blogs, books, posts or attend my learning programs. So two words from me to reflect on now: thank you.

Checklist for career change

Checklist for career change My husband recently changed careers. Well, not really recently actually two years ago. But for those of you who have never endured a career change, two years is nothing. It still feels like the beginning because salary-wise, you *are* at the beginning. For the most part, his switch has been going well. He went from management positions in the entertainment industry to field research in a social justice think tank. Basically, he spends his days in prisons, trying to get the government to implement new programs. He made the change exactly the way a career advisor would recommend not surprising since he has to eat dinner with one every night. For those of you considering a change, here is the plan he followed: Step 1. Soul search. Consider all aspect of change including, lifestyle, pay and any education youll need. Be realistic about what you value in life and work. Step 2.Downsize. Get rid of huge car payments, huge mortgage payments, and huge expectations for dinners, vacations and clothes. Step 3. Network. Headhunters and help wanted ads are geared toward people who have skills in a certain area. People who change jobs do not have skills in the new area, so networking is the best way to get someone to give you a chance. Step 4. Try it out. Youll never know if you fit into the career environment until you try it. A baby step, like volunteering, or taking a part-time job will allow you to go back to your originally career if need be. After step four, there is nothing but taking the leap. So my husband did. His mentor at his new job is ten years younger than he is. His boss makes 25% less than what my husbands paycheck used to be. The people below my husband in pecking order are college interns. And this is two years after he made the switch. Not that any of this is a surprise. Of course, this is what happens when you change careers. By all measures, my husband is flourishing in his new career. He is at a top non-profit agency, he is writing significant papers, he is working with geniuses. But he is making no money. I keep telling myself that this is what we knew would happen. That we traded money for career happiness. I assure myself that my husband will make more money later, when his is not swimming in the ranks of college interns. But there is so much pressure to be happy. Pressure from me, that is, on my husband. Every night I check in with him look for signs that he is elated with his new career choice. And, big surprise, with a new career and a young child, most nights he is exhausted, not elated. Which makes me say, Why are we making all these financial sacrifices if youre not happy?!!?! My husband doesnt answer. Its hard when he doesnt answer. But I know its because he feels guilty because he really, really, really, doesnt want to go back to the entertainment industry. And I cant stop thinking, If youre unhappy in both careers, why not be unhappy in the one that pays more? I know youre thinking, Gosh, Penelope, can you be a little more supportive? But dont say that until youve had a spouse throw away a lucrative career. And anyway, Im trying; I see there is one more step on the career change checklist that we probably should have done: Step 5: Set spousal expectations. I should have gone through the process with my husband. I should have evaluated with him what sacrifices I can make, what lifestyle expectations I had, even how happy I expected him to be. I was so determined to let him make his own decisions that Im finding now that Im the one who is floundering. You think, at some point, that you know for sure a career change was good. But thats not true for everyone. Or, maybe its true for everyone, but not in the first few years. Yes, you can be sure that the new job is more fun or more rewarding than the old job, but how much more fun do you need to be having in order to justify the financial sacrifice? Im not sure. So we keep going on the career change path, hoping to find the answer buried beneath the indignities.

Tips For Writing a Resume Experience Statement

Tips For Writing a Resume Experience StatementThe first and most important tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you need to focus on the positives. Try to focus on what the opportunities are and the advantages that you will get when you go to work for the company. If the information given to you about the company is not flattering, then the resume is not going to get the job. So do not worry about it.The second tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you should not make the statement that you were let go from a job position because of poor performance. This will definitely result in the employer questioning your capacity and experience. So be honest. Tell them the truth as you see it. At the same time, you must remember that the employer also wants the truth. You need to tell the employer that you have provided specific details of your last assignment. This is the best tip for writing a resume experience statement to provide good details about your previ ous assignments. The more detailed the details are, the better and more convincing the statement will be.The third tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you should write something that will grab the attention of the employer. After all, he is hiring people to work for him and if he finds you are lacking in this regard, he may decide to not hire you. This is why you should try to come up with a powerful statement that will speak highly of you. It will attract the attention of the employer. Also, you need to remember that employers are looking for someone who has a good reputation with clients. They do not want to hire someone who has a history of unsatisfactory work at their place of business. So write a resume experience statement that will convey the truth about your past employment. The fourth tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you should always make sure that you include a resume experience statement that emphasizes on the positive aspects of your experience. It is a fact that experiences will play a very important role in creating a positive impression. However, you must also keep in mind that the employer will be a little skeptical about the positive aspects. The fifth important tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you should put down only the facts that are truthful. Of course, this means you need to emphasize the positive points. However, do not go overboard and just go into excessive detail. You need to provide the correct information and do not lie or exaggerate. The sixth tip for writing a resume experience statement is that you should be able to put down something that can be interpreted as being positive. You should not lie or exaggerate. If you do, you will definitely have trouble getting hired.

Protecting Your Finances When Youre Out Of Work

Protecting Your Finances When Youre Out Of Work Being unexpectedly out of work as the result of an injury or job termination can be a very stressful event. If you’ve been caught off-guard by this temporary or permanent leave from your job then you might be worrying about your finances. Perhaps you’re waiting to be fit enough to return to work, or perhaps you’re searching for a new job. Either way, you need to make sure that your costs are covered whilst you’re out of a wage. These pieces of advice should help you to protect your finances whilst you’re not working. Make money from home. You might not be able to head into the office if you’re injured or unwell, but that doesn’t mean you’re unable to earn any money. In the modern age, you can use the internet to bring in additional sources of income. You could start freelancing, for example. You could find ways to sell your talents. Maybe your profession involves writing, web development, or graphic design; whatever your area of interest, you could use freelance sites such as Fiverr to earn some money from it. You could also consider making money through sites such as Amazon by selling some goods on there. There are so many ways to make money from home if you start thinking outside the box. You might be stuck in the house, but that doesn’t mean you should be without an income. Of course, there are other ways to supplement your finances Get financial support. If you’ve ended up out of work on a temporary basis as the result of an accident then you might want to research your options in terms of financial support. When you’ve been injured as the result of an event that wasn’t your fault then there are often legal routes that can get you some sort of compensation to cover your costs for medical bills or time taken off work. Maybe you were injured as the result of a road accident because of negligence or improper truck maintenance. Whatever the case, it’s important that you assess all possible routes to get the financial support you deserve for the time you’ve had to take off work. You don’t have to let your personal savings take a hit if you were injured as the result of an accident which wasn’t your fault. Start budgeting. Of course, one of the smartest ways to protect your finances when you’re out of work is to simply start budgeting. You might find that you’ll have more than enough money to cover your costs whilst you’re not working if you reduce unnecessary expenditures. You need to track both your sources of income and your outgoings. Budgeting is all about spending within your means. The best way to do this is to pinpoint any expenses that could be cut out of your life or simply reduced. Maybe you’ve developed some bad habits that you could give up, such as smoking or drinking too much. Maybe you could save money on your weekly shop by using online coupons to get a discount. The point is that you could improve your financial situation by cutting down on your monthly expenses.

LinkedIn adds new sections targeted to students -

LinkedIn adds new sections targeted to students - LinkedIn just launched a new initiative aimed at students, a group sometimes slow to join the growing professional network. Many students believe LinkedIn isnt for them, since they may not already have much professional experience and probably do not have large professional networks. Now, LinkedIn offers sections to allow college students to showcase their accomplishments, as reported on LinkedIns blog: Projects: Its absolutely useful to highlight projects as examples of experience on your resume, but you can also include them in a special section on LinkedIn. Pay special attention to projects focusing on work youd like to continue to do. Honors Awards: A forever section not just for college students, but you may want to point out certain awards you havent listed elsewhere. For example, LinkedIn asks, Did you make the Deans List or earn a merit-based scholarship? Add it to your profile. While much of your profile is a subjective characterization of your abilities, Honors Awards provide objective validation for your accomplishments. Organizations: Many employers appreciate your work with organizations, demonstrating your leadership and other important skills. Keep an eye on describing how YOU made a difference at the organization to help your profile stand out. Test Scores: If you have excellent scores you want to share, this is the place! You may include standardized tests or your GPA here. Courses: Have you taken a lot of relevant courses, helping you prepare for your next career move? Include select courses on your profile to help demonstrate your background and experience. How-to: Add new student sections to your profile. Go to your LinkedIn profile page in edit mode, and click the blue Add sections bar under your profile summary. For details about adding your information, visit LinkedIns blog...They remind readers, Quick Tip: Â  You can rearrange the sections of the profile to highlight your strongest sections. Â  Simply click on the section header, and drag and drop it to the best location on the page.
